The Factory was built to a cutting edge Modernist design in 1953 for Laurence, Scott & Electromotors Ltd as a statement of LSEs engineering innovation.
The company was one of the UK's oldest and most important electrical machinery manufacturers.
Much of The Factory was the site of LSEs technical drawing section and it was here that its advanced motors were designed.
These have featured around the world in everything from the Royal Navys submarine fleet and The Titanic, to the excavating machines for the Channel Tunnel.
The Factory was designed with the maximum number of windows and long skylights enabling designers to work in as much natural light as possible.
